Breast Augmentation

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, otherwise known as breast enlargement or breast enhancement, describes the plastic surgery process women undergo for fuller, more beautiful breasts. Whether you want to increase your breast size, or if pregnancy or weight loss has resulted in the loss of breast volume, shape, or symmetry, breast augmentation can give you the feminine look you desire. This is also frequently done as a reconstructive technique following breast surgery to maintain a natural look and feel.

Breast augmentation is performed with breast implants that are filled with silicone or saline depending on your preference. Leaders in the field of breast surgery, our board certified plastic surgeons also specialize in revision breast surgery for patients who have breast implants but are unsatisfied with the results.

Who can Benefit from Breast Augmentation?

Adults who are bothered by the size, shape, or symmetry of their breasts can often benefit from breast augmentation. Ideal candidates are those who are not pregnant or breastfeeding, whose breasts are fully developed, and those with realistic expectations for the outcome of their procedure. Implant Choices

Breast augmentation offers many choices for the size, shape, and location of breast implants. The primary implant types available are saline or silicone.

Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water and can be filled with varying amounts of saline for the desired shape, firmness, and feel of the breast.

Silicone breast implants are filled with an elastic gel that moves and feels much like natural breast tissue. Currently, silicone breast implants are FDA approved for women 22 years of age and older.

Our board certified plastic surgeons can advise you on the choices best suited for your body and lifestyle based on factors like breast anatomy, skin elasticity, body type, and desired breast size.

The Procedure

Every woman is unique and your breast augmentation experience is tailored uniquely to fit your goals and your body. Breast augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia to maximize your safety and comfort during and after the procedure.

There is a selection of incision methods that can be used during breast augmentation. The one that your surgeon uses will depend on a number of factors, as well as his or her preference.

Periareolar Incision

An incision is created around the lower half of the nipple. The implant is then inserted through this opening.

Inframammary Incision

An incision is created in the crease below the breast, also known as the inframammary fold. The implant is then placed through this incision.

Transaxillary Incision

An incision is created in the crease of the armpit, through which an implant is placed.

The typical breast enhancement surgery takes one to two hours and is completed in our fully accredited ambulatory surgery center conveniently located in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan.
