Asymmetry Correction

What is Breast Asymmetry Correction?

Breast asymmetry occurs when one breast is a different size, position, or shape than the other breast. This is a very common occurrence and actually affects more than half of all women. A woman’s breasts may vary in size or shape due to many factors, including puberty, hormonal changes, certain underlying conditions such as tubular breasts, or physical trauma.

Breast asymmetry can be defined in a number of ways, including differences in:

  • Breast volume
  • Shape
  • Amount of skin
  • Position or size of the areolas
  • Position of the inframammary crease

Who Can Benefit from Breast Asymmetry Correction?

Women who are bothered by asymmetrical breasts can benefit from this procedure. However, you should wait to have surgery if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or are planning on becoming pregnant. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate is to schedule a consultation appointment at our Grand Rapids office today.

The Procedure

In order to correct asymmetrical breasts, there are a number of procedures that can be performed, including:
Breast Augmentation: In cases where the patient wishes to increase the size of a smaller breast to gain symmetry, a breast augmentation can be performed. During this procedure, a breast implant is placed to help increase the size and projection of the breast.
Breast Augmentation with Lift: In cases where a patient wishes to increase the size of a smaller breast but also wishes to lift the breast, breast augmentation and lift can be performed.
Breast Reduction: A breast reduction can be performed to reduce the size of a breast that is larger than the other. Excess tissue is removed, and the size of the areola can also be reduced.

Breast Asymmetry Correction Results

Following your breast asymmetry correction procedure, you will need to wear a special compression garment to reduce swelling and hold your new breast contour in place. Swelling, bruising, and redness are to be expected but will resolve with time. Overall recovery time will depend on the procedure performed. Our team will provide you with specific post-op instructions regarding recovery to ensure you achieve optimal results.
