Asymmetry Correction

What is Breast Asymmetry Correction?

Breast asymmetry occurs when one breast is a different size, position, or shape than the other breast. This is a very common occurrence and actually affects more than half of all women. A woman’s breasts may vary in size or shape due to many factors, including puberty, hormonal changes, certain underlying conditions such as tubular breasts, or physical trauma.

Breast asymmetry can be defined in a number of ways, including differences in:

  • Breast volume
  • Shape
  • Amount of skin
  • Position or size of the areolas
  • Position of the inframammary crease

Understanding Breast Asymmetry

Breast asymmetry can be defined in a number of ways. It can include a difference in breast volume, breast shape, amount of excess skin, size or position of the areolas, and the position of the inframmary crease (breast crease).

Every patient’s breast asymmetry is different, and our team at Plastic Surgery Associates has the expertise to ensure each patient receives the even and symmetrical breasts they’re looking for.

Breast Asymmetry Correction Procedures

At Plastic Surgery Associates, we offer a variety of different breast procedure options to correct breast asymmetry. Which one is right for you depends on the results you’re looking for. If you’re looking to enhance the size of your breasts and address asymmetric breast tissue, a breast augmentation may be the perfect option. Want to lift your breasts to a more youthful position? A breast lift can give you the perkier breasts you want and fix asymmetry. A breast augmentation can also be combined with a lift for the ultimate breast rejuvenation.

Seeking to reduce your breast size and correct breast asymmetry? A breast reduction surgery can reduce excess breast tissue and ensure your breasts are symmetrical.

Who Can Benefit from Breast Asymmetry Correction?

Women who are bothered by asymmetrical breasts can benefit from this procedure. However, you should wait to have surgery if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or are planning on becoming pregnant. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate is to schedule a consultation appointment at our Grand Rapids office today.

The Consultation Process

The breast asymmetry correction surgery consultation is relatively straightforward. During your initial consultation, your provider will go over your medical history and list of medications, perform a comprehensive exam to determine the level of asymmetry correction needed and breast position, and discuss your aesthetic goals. This is also the perfect time to ask questions and address any concerns you have.

Preparing For Your Surgery

To prepare for your breast asymmetry correction surgery, you’ll want to stick to a healthy diet, drink plenty of water, exercise regularly, and avoid smoking. You’ll also want to limit your alcohol intake and avoid taking certain medications, including blood thinners. We also recommend you avoid weight fluctuations and stick to a stable weight.

You should also arrange for a friend or family member to drive you to and from surgery and to take care of you for the first day or two afterward.

The Procedure

In order to correct asymmetrical breasts, there are a number of procedures that can be performed, including:
Breast Augmentation: In cases where the patient wishes to increase the size of a smaller breast to gain symmetry, a breast augmentation can be performed. During this procedure, a breast implant is placed to help increase the size and projection of the breast.
Breast Augmentation with Lift: In cases where a patient wishes to increase the size of a smaller breast but also wishes to lift the breast, breast augmentation and lift can be performed.
Breast Reduction: A breast reduction can be performed to reduce the size of a breast that is larger than the other. Excess tissue is removed, and the size of the areola can also be reduced.

Breast Asymmetry Correction Results

Following your breast asymmetry correction procedure, you will need to wear a special compression garment to reduce swelling and hold your new breast contour in place. Swelling, bruising, and redness are to be expected but will resolve with time. Overall recovery time will depend on the procedure performed. Our team will provide you with specific post-op instructions regarding recovery to ensure you achieve optimal results.

Recovery and Aftercare

After your breast asymmetry correction surgery, you will likely have some redness, swelling, and bruising, but those side effects will dissipate as you heal. You will want to limit your activity level and wear a compression garmet for a few weeks to aid the healing process. In total, the recovery process takes about two weeks, at which point you can return to work, with complete recovery taking about six weeks.

Breast Asymmetry Correction Results and Patient Satisfaction

You will see some initial results immediately after your procedure, but most of the results will be hidden by the swelling and bruising. More significant results appear in the weeks following the procedure as the swelling subsides and you’re further along in the healing process. Full results take about six weeks to show up, at which point you will see your final improvements.

When patients come to Plastic Surgery Associates for breast asymmetry correction surgery, they are highly satisfied with their results. They not only notice a boost in confidence and self-esteem but also an improvement in their body image and their overall well-being.

Risks and Complications

As with any surgery, breast asymmetry correction can come with risks and complications as well. What your exact risks are depends on the type of surgery you’re having done. Some of the complications to look out for include infection, bleeding, scarring, implant rupture or leak, fluid accumulation, and changes in the breast and nipple sensation.
