Tummy Tucks for Sustained Weight Loss
Body contouring procedures like liposuction and tummy tucks (otherwise known as an “abdominoplasty”) are popular cosmetic procedures performed at Plastic Surgery Associates. Nationally, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that the number of tummy tuck procedures has risen 70% since 2000.
After major weight loss through diet and exercise or bariatric surgery, some patients are frustrated by sagging excess skin and stubborn “trouble areas” of belly fat that remain. A tummy tuck removes excess, sagging skin and tightens abdominal muscles to restore a tone and contour to the abdomen.
Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal published an article about the health benefits of tummy tucks. New research shows that tummy tucks and other body contouring procedures promote sustained weight loss by motivating patients to keep their weight in check.
A study in the October issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that bariatric patients were more likely to keep off their weight after body contouring, “…regaining an average of just over 1 pound a year compared with 4 pounds annually for bariatric patients who didn’t have contouring procedures.” (via WSJ.com)
Dr. Douglas Vander Woude of Plastic Surgery Associates weighs in on the subject. “We have seen firsthand the benefits of the procedure, and not just in appearance,” said Dr. Vander Woude. “For some, a tummy tuck can be life changing. Now there are scientific articles that verify what our patients have experienced. This procedure or a combination of body procedures are especially great for patients who have stubborn areas resistant to diet and exercise.”
