Rhinoplasty Recovery: What to Expect
Nose reshaping is a major surgery, and it’s important to take your recovery seriously. If you have an upcoming rhinoplasty appointment or are considering getting the nose procedure, you should know what to expect from the recovery. By taking good care of yourself after the surgery, you reduce your risk of complications and ensure that you achieve great results.
Swelling
Swelling around the nose is one of the most significant side effects after rhinoplasty. The swelling usually peaks on the second or third day after surgery and then gradually decreases. However, it can take a few months for the swelling to go away entirely. Keeping your head elevated and drinking plenty of fluids will help with swelling. Additionally, you should avoid bending over or forcibly blowing your nose for at least two weeks after your surgery.
Discoloration
Discoloration around your eyes and nose is normal after rhinoplasty. You might see bruising and redness get worse a few days after your surgery, but it typically lasts less than a week. Like with swelling, keeping your head elevated can reduce discoloration.
Pain
Pain after rhinoplasty can vary significantly from patient to patient. Your surgeon may prescribe you pain medication to use in the days following your procedure. These medications may also have a risk of side effects, though, so you must take them exactly as prescribed. Tylenol can also be an effective pain reliever when recovering from rhinoplasty as well. However, you should avoid taking aspirin and ibuprofen and speak with your board certified plastic surgeon about your alternative options.
Resuming Normal Activities
Returning to your normal daily activities will be a gradual process. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions after your procedure and during your follow-up appointment. You should be able to walk around normally a few days after surgery, which can help with swelling, sleep, and appetite. Your bandages will be removed around eight days after the procedure, at which point you should be able to return to work. Don’t perform any strenuous exercise until your doctor has cleared you, which usually occurs several weeks after surgery. For at least two months after rhinoplasty, avoid any sports or activities where your nose could be bumped.
