Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, is the most common procedure we perform at Plastic Surgery Associates. Liposuction reshapes the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas, including the stomach, buttocks, hips, love handles, thighs, breast, back, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. It is particularly suited to those areas that do not respond well to weight loss or exercise. Liposuction can be performed on several areas of the body at the same time, and it can also be combined with other cosmetic procedures, such as a tummy tuck, for optimal results.
Liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure in our fully accredited ambulatory surgery center. Liposuction is always performed using the tumescent technique, infusing the areas being treated with an anesthetic solution that allows for the painless and meticulous removal of fat with minimal bleeding. Small liposuction cannulas (hollow tubes) are placed through tiny, discrete incisions, through which the fat cells are removed and the regions are sculpted.
What Can I Expect?
Following the procedure, patients wear a compression garment day and night for two weeks, and at night for an additional two to four weeks. The garment may be removed for showers as needed. There may be bruising and swelling of the areas of liposuction, but this will resolve within weeks. Most people return to work in two to three days after surgery, resume light aerobic exercise in about a week, and begin more strenuous activity three weeks after liposuction. We can discuss more details on the procedure and how to help the recovery process at your cosmetic consultation.
