In our last post, Courtney introduced the LightSheer Duet laser that we use at Plastic Surgery Associates for laser hair removal procedures. In the video below, see how you can banish the fuzz in time for summer!
Before Your Appointment:
To ensure best results, closely follow your skin care specialist's instructions to prepare for the procedure. Don't wax, tweeze, or use depilatories six weeks prior, as that will disturb the follicle and remove the hair that the laser must target. Instead, shave the area to be treated before your appointment, leaving outlying hairs to be marked for treatment. Be sure to avoid sun exposure for a month prior to treatment, as well as self-tanning lotions. You will be asked to reschedule your appointment due to potential complications if you arrive with excessively tan skin, as the laser can't target hair as well on dark skin.
Your Treatment:
Our patient Jillian related the feeling to the light flick of a rubber band. The discomfort is mild, fleeting, and, oftentimes, irritation felt afterward is from shaving. As you can see in the video, small dots appear where Courtney passed with the laser. Those specks are singed hairs that can be wiped away, and others will shed in the weeks following your treatment.
After Your Appointment:
You may have initial redness and mild swelling comparable to what you may see after waxing that typically disappears after 2-3 hours. Dry skin, tenderness or whitehead-like bumps are common, normal side effects that subside within a few days. If you had your underarms treated, avoid deodorant until redness and irritation disappears. Be cautious in the first 4-5 days following your treatment to prevent trauma to the treated area. You may use ice packs or aloe vera gel for comfort. Know that some treated hairs may not shed for weeks - if necessary you can shave those areas.

What is Laser Hair Removal?
Our LightSheer® Duet laser uses a large beam of highly concentrated light to target unwanted hair. The light emitted is absorbed by melanin (pigment) in hair follicles, damaging the bulb and hair shaft as they heat up. This damage inhibits the hair’s chances to re-grow. The two hand pieces make treatments more versatile, efficient, and reduce treatment times by allowing for a greater depth of penetration.
Why Choose Laser Hair Removal?
Why spend more time and money on shaving, waxing or depilatories when you can save more in the long run? According to a 2008 survey, the average woman will spend $10,000-23,000 during her lifetime on hair removal. That accounts for nearly 60 days of removing unwanted hair! (Source).

Where Can I Have Laser Hair Removal Treatments?
You can receive laser hair treatments wherever you would do other hair removal approaches (i.e.: shaving, waxing). Common areas for treatment include the face, legs, arms and underarms, back, and bikini area.
When Can I Start and How Many Treatments Do I Need?
Now is the best time to begin your treatments to ensure your new skin is ready for summer! As Courtney mentions in the video, patients typically schedule 6-8 treatments anywhere from 4-10 weeks apart, depending on the area they are having treated. Because your hairs are on different growth cycles, it is important to schedule your appointments according to these growth patterns in order to see best results.
Laser hair removal works best on pale skin, so plan on beginning your treatments well before you plan on tanning, or using self-tanner.
Who is a Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?
The ideal candidate for laser hair removal is someone with fair skin and coarser, darker hair. This does not necessarily mean those of you with red, blonde or gray hair are excluded, but results may vary depending on a variety of factors like hormones, sex, skin or hair color.
